Even if you have personal auto insurance,
any vehicles involved in an accident while engaged in company
business may not be covered by your personal auto policy.
A commercial auto policy covers the exposures of using a vehicle
for business use.
The commercial auto policy can be written
as an individual policy or as part of a commercial package
policy. The types of vehicles that may be insured under the
commercial auto policy include trucks of all sizes, truck-tractor
units, commercial trailers, rental cars, cabs, private passenger
type vehicles, farm machinery, construction equipement, and
special or mobile equipment.
Special coverages can be included which
cover the use of "non-owned" vehicles, such as when
employees use their own vehicles to run errands. If employees
rent a vehicle while on company business, special coverage
needs to be in place on the policy to ensure they are covered.
Also, If an employee doesn't have a personal auto policy,
special attention needs to be made to ensure they are covered
under the business auto policy.
